What is local SEO? 7 basic steps for small businesses

Seven essential steps to show up when a customer searches 'near me', explained in plain language.

Local SEO is the work that makes your business appear in searches for a specific area: “wedding venue in Munich”, “pharmacy near me”, “car inspection in Leeds”. People making these searches usually want a business right now, which makes local SEO the most direct route to ready customers. It takes steady, correct work rather than a big budget.

1. Complete your Google Business Profile

It is the basis of appearing on the map. Category, hours, photos, services and review replies should all be complete. See our Google Business Profile guide.

2. Keep name, address and phone identical everywhere

Your website, Google profile, social media and directory listings should show exactly the same details. Consistent information across sources earns more trust from Google.

3. Create clear pages for each service and area

Give your main services their own pages, and state clearly which districts you serve. If someone searches “air-conditioning repair in Lyon”, the answer should be plainly on your page.

4. Make the site fast on phones

Most local searches happen on phones. A slow site, or one where the phone number is hard to find, sends customers to a competitor. Your number should be one tap away.

5. Ask for reviews, and answer them

Ask happy customers to leave a Google review, and reply politely to every review. Never buy fake reviews: it breaks Google’s rules and can hurt your profile.

6. Add structured data

Structured data states “this is a business, here is its address and opening hours” in a form machines read. Visitors don’t see it, but Google and AI assistants understand your site more accurately.

Links from local associations, chambers of commerce, regional news sites and partners show you genuinely exist in the area. Helpful local content supports your visibility too.

How long does it take?

Honestly, it depends on your sector, area and competition. Noticeable results usually appear within 3-6 months; that’s a common observation, not a guarantee. Nobody can honestly guarantee a ranking, so be wary of anyone who does.
